UP Diliman Students Stage Fiery Black Friday Protest Against Corruption
Diliman, Quezon City - Defying the somber mood of a typical Thursday, students at the University of the Philippines-Diliman ignited a spirited "Black Friday" protest on September 12th. This wasn't about snagging discounted gadgets, though. Instead, these passionate students were taking a stand against the staggering billions of pesos lost to corruption in flood control and other infrastructure projects.
The protest, captured in striking images by UP Collegian/ UJP UP Diliman, saw a sea of determined faces chanting slogans and waving placards. The students' message was clear: the misuse of public funds for personal gain is unacceptable.
"This isn't just about numbers on a spreadsheet," declared one student leader, her voice ringing with conviction. "These are funds meant to protect our communities, build schools, and improve lives. When corruption steals these resources, it steals our future."
The "Black Friday" theme was a deliberate choice, highlighting the "theft" of public money through corrupt practices. Students argued that the lost billions could have made a tangible difference in addressing critical issues facing the nation.
The protest underscores a growing sense of frustration among young Filipinos who are demanding greater transparency and accountability from their leaders. The UP Diliman students have sent a powerful message: they are watching, they are engaged, and they will not tolerate corruption.
This demonstration is a reminder that the fight for good governance is alive and well in the Philippines, driven by a generation determined to build a better future.
